Actinide Wastes - Full Ceramic
Full-ceramic matrices offer significant advantages for actinide waste streams that do not contain significant quantities of glass-forming components. Advantages include:
• Very high actinide waste loadings up to 50%, delivering enhanced throughput
• Neutron absorbers readily incorporated with fissile material, providing in built criticality control over the life cycle
• Excellent proliferation resistance
• Excellent chemical durability, normalised actinide releases10 - 100 times less than glass
• 8 times reduction in worker neutron dose compared to borosilicate glass
• Flexible and mature process technology using either HIPing or a MOx-like sintering route
