UK Plutonium Residues
Highly impure, heterogeneous plutonium residue waste streams present unique technical, safety, regulatory, security, and socio-political challenges. A range of these wastes exists in the UK at the Sellafield site from early fuel development activities and require stabilisation.
The wastes are problematic due to:
• Large chemical and physical heterogeneity
• Impurities present are problematic for incorporation in either entirely glass or entirely ceramic waste forms
• Waste consists of actinides, salts, slags and metals
